2021 was an interesting DreamBIG year to say the least. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, DreamBIG managed to go ahead without much disruption, with more than 100,000 attendances across over an assortment of performances, workshops, activities and more. The theme was 'Be Curious', and it certainly was a year to explore a brave new world!
The festival remained as big as ever despite reduced capacities and social distancing. The Opening Event shifted to Festival Theatre, and saw 1200 students and teachers come together to sing David Bowie's Space Oddity and hear from South Australian rising star Shantae Barnes-Cowan. With a special guest performance by Australia's Got Talent's Mitch Tambo, this incredible event set the tone for 10 days of fun.
The festival had more than 80 free and paid events, with over 100 sold out performances. DreamBIG also played host to the first APAM Gathering since the beginning of the pandemic, with producers, artists and creatives descending on DreamBIG both in person and online. Big Family Weekend also returned, with a huge range of shows at the Adelaide Festival Centre precinct and venues around Adelaide, including the State Library, AGSA, SA Museum, Space Discovery Centre, and the Botanic Gardens. Big Family Weekend enjoyed a cumulative audience of 35,000, with Fork on the Road providing delicious food options in Elder Park.
